1837 Hand Pumper
This hand pumper, built in 1837, was originally at the Elkhorn Tannery located at the end of Kistler Street in Eastb Stroudsburg, PA. In 1936, the Tannery closed and the hand pumper was donated to Acme Hose Co. No. 1, with the Fire Chief at that time was George Englehart.
The Fire Department had member David Carlton restore the hand pumper to its original condition. The wheels had to be recast at a local foundry.
The hand pumper has a 2-1/2″ suction intake and a 1-1/2″ discharge port. The hand pumper was made by Westerman Pump Co. in Genoa, Italy, is still in working condition but was never actually used to fight any fires with Acme Hose Co. No. 1. It has been featured in a few firefighting demonstrations. The hand pumper has also taken several prizes in many parades.
